Microsoft Delays Release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) and VISTA Service Pack 1 (SP1)

The anticipated release of the service packs is due to a conflict with another Microsoft application, “Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS)”.  RMS is a Point-of-Sale application that is supposedly a complete solution for small and mid-sized retailers. The Service Packs were scheduled for release on April 29th, 2008. There are some direct download links being posted for the Service Packs, but Microsoft representatives warn about using this method. In fact, Microsoft has recommends that you only download files from official Microsoft web sites to avoid any potential viruses or malware issues.

Trojan Downloader – Win32.Cntr.A

A Trojan Downloader is a program that simply downloads other software (usually malware or spyware) to your computer. This particular one installs itself into the Windows system registry and runs every time you start your computer. It’s reported that this Trojan spreads through removable media like flash drives. Most updated anti-virus programs will detect and remove this threat.

"Free" Software Downloads

PortableApps Suite (Standard Edition v1.0)

This is a comprehensive applications collection that can run from most 512 Meg flash drives (USB drives). It includes the portable version of the popular FireFox web browser, Thunderbird email client, OpenOffice.org office suite, a calendar, day planner, anti-virus program, and much more. All of these freeware applications can be easily run from a taskbar menu. This is a nice solution to when you have to take your work with you and don’t have an Internet connection. The Standard version of the software is about 90 Meg in size, so it will take a little time to complete the download. If you prefer, there is also a “Lite” version available at about 30 Meg and a “Base” version that can be customized to take up even less space. Automatic Windows Log Off

Many people are called away from their computer to deal with other issues, leaving their data easily accessible by others. One solution is to password protect your screensaver. Another method is to have your computer automatically log you off. There is a tool called, “Winexit.scr” available in the free Windows Server 2003 Toolkit. The tool runs through your screensaver utility and allows you to select the time and displayed message before logging off.
