Anti-Virus/Virus Removal Tools Anti-Virus/Virus Removal Tools AVG Free Edition Anti-Virus (Grisoft) is "free" protection for your computer system. Do full system virus scans, automatically download updates, scan e-mail attachments, schedule custom scans, etc. It detects and quarantines most viruses, but some will require additional tools for removal. (Warning! If an executable file is moved to "quarantine", then that program will not run until you somehow remove the virus and restore it to it's original folder.) Avast! 4 Home Anti-Virus This compact application offers many of the features of its costly counterparts. The only thing that is lacking is the ability to schedule a complete virus scan. However, you can schedule a full scan during your next “boot” sequence. This can be handy if you suspect that a virus infected file is loading at startup. The program is free for non-commercial use, but does require a simple registration before the 60 day trail period runs out. PC Tools v3.1 protects your PC as you are working, surfing and playing; detects, quarantines, disinfects and destroys viruses, trojans and worms; OnGuard™ protects your computer against threats in real-time; and automatically checks for frequent updates against the latest threats. Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic protects your private computer against dangerous viruses, worms, Trojans and costly dialers. ClamWin is a Free Antivirus for Microsoft Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and 2003. It is an Open Source program with high detection rates for viruses and spyware; Scanning Scheduler; Automatic downloads of regularly updated Virus Database; Standalone virus scanner and right-click menu integration to Microsoft Windows Explorer; Addin to Microsoft Outlook to remove virus-infected attachments automatically. Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830) This tool checks your computer for infection by malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps to remove the infection. If you have installed a virus or "worm" through an e-mail attachment,
your anti-virus software might be able to find it, if you have your virus
definitions up to date, but it might not be able to completely remove the
culprit from your computer. Symantec tm, the
makers of Norton tm Anti-Virus offer a library
of "free" virus/worm removal tools to download. Follow the instructions
carefully! Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2007 Free lets you scan your system for "third-party" software that may have been installed with that other "free" software you've put on your computer. Use this utility after you install any "free' software. Especially if you've downloaded any of the music sharing software on the Internet. SpyBot Search & Destroy (PepiMK Software) will scan your system for spyware, categorizes the results, and allows you to select which entries to remove. Be careful, because of it's thorough findings, you can delete entries necessary for some of your "non-spyware" programs. It includes a preventative program called, "Tea Timer" that will run in the background and notify you of any changes to the system registry. Spyware Terminator is a complete spyware removal product which includes an anti-virus option (Clam Anti-virus). The Spyware protection program is free for private and commercial use. It contains “real-time” protection, various manual & scheduled scanning options, safe quarantine of suspected files, and automatic updates. Search Engine Tools Google Toolbar - Incorporates a great pop-up ad blocker, gives instant access to the Google search engine, has an auto-fill feature to help complete on-line forms, and other features. (Sorry, it only works with the Internet Explorer browser.) There is a Beta 3 Version available with more features. Google also offers a Desktop Search program to help locate files on your computer, but it has a tendency to slow down some computer systems. Copernic Agent Basic V6™ - This program will do simultaneous searches of some of the most popular search engines, returning the top ten results from each. Check out Copernic Agent Personal™ and Copernic Agent Professional™. There is a nominal charge for these versions, but they are packed with added features for power Internet users. Multimedia Fast Stone Photo Resizer is much more than a batch photo resizing program. It is very flexible and allows you to convert, rename, resize, crop, rotate, change color depth, add text and watermark images in a quick and easy batch mode. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a versatile graphics manipulation package. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc. Media Coder allows you to convert to and from many audio and video compression formats and re-multiplex into various formats. Free Fonts - Now you can download and install over 6500 Windows fonts at no charge. Just go to the site, select the font(s) you want, download them, and install them in your "fonts" folder in your version of Windows. Realworks RealOne Media Player The free version of RealOne Player lets you play the latest media formats. High Quality Video with full-screen theater mode. TurboPlay™ No more waiting for clips to load with broadband connection. You click. It plays. And there's more. Business & Productivity Software OpenOffice.org is a complete MS Office Suite equivalent. It includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database, presentation, drawing and math calculations programs. You can open, modify, and save most MS Office files with this package. OxygenOffice Professional is based on OpenOffice.org and contains more extras like templates, clipart, samples, fonts and VBA support. It includes more than 3400 graphics, both clip art and photos, which are integrated into the gallery and can easily be placed into any OxygenOffice document. Several templates and sample documents are included, as well as over 90 fonts. Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2008 is a nice solution for a small business that needs an accounting program. It uses forms and documents based on MS Word and MS Excel, so they can be easily customized for your business. It doesn't include a payroll module, but that service can be purchased through ADP. Microsoft also offers a free download of their viewers and converters to allow anyone to view Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Visio, etc. Microsoft Office Templates - Already designed stationary, cards, business forms, letters, marketing, finance, accounting, etc. documents for your Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc. Utilities Belarc Advisor is a computer system inventory program that will give you all the information you need to know about your computer. The software scans your computer and returns a very detailed hardware and software inventory. Included are motherboard and hard drive serial numbers, amount of installed memory, and even software installation key codes (just in case you've misplaced them). TweakNow RegCleaner removes those "left-behind" registry entries after you uninstall software. It runs a scan of your registry and reports Safe to Delete, Unsafe to Delete, and Unknown entries. Make sure to backup your registry before using this tool. Advanced WindowsCare v2 (www.iobit.com) - This "free" version not only cleans the registry, but will scan your computer for obsolete files, temporary files, performs a spyware scan, optimizes your system, and much more. Again, backup your registry before you run this valuable utility. WinASO RegDefrag performs a defragmentation of your registry. If you have installed and uninstalled programs, then you have probably left spaces in the registry file. The larger your registry file is, the longer it will take to boot and access programs. This nice utility includes backup of your registry when you elect to defrag the file. AusLogic Disk Defrag performs a similar function as the Windows Disk Defragmenter with a nicer interface and seems to take less time to complete. Replicator (Karenware) is a very useful backup solution to streamline saving your valuable data to floppy drive, hard disk drive, CDRW, etc. It includes a scheduler and filters to customize to your backup needs. Data Life Guard v11.0™ - Western Digital™ offers this free software suite that combines all of their hard disk drive installation and management utilities into one easy to use program. All of the utilities are available separately. There is a program that will load into memory and check your system on-line against the Western Digital database for any known concerns. The program can be disabled, if you want to maintain your on-line privacy. Internet Browsers Internet Explorer v6.0 SP1 and v7.0 (Microsoft) offers added security and privacy features, more Internet tools for customization, and more stable Internet Browsing. For more tips on how to optimize IE 6.0 go to the IE Community Page. Netscape (built with Mozilla) is now available for those of you that prefer that Web Browser. You can do a "custom" installation, but some "tweaking" needs to be done. It does offer an integrated "pop-up" ad blocker, but you have to remove the advertiser addresses from the "exclusions" section. It no longer includes an email client, but you can download Netscape Messenger as a separate program. FireFox (Mozilla) is a "no-frills", but powerful Internet Browser. It includes various "skins" to change it's look and an integrated "pop-up" ad blocker. According to the manufacturer, this browser is not susceptible to ActiveX attacks. Other Download Sources DriverGuide.com™ is a good source for hard to find software drivers for your system. Make sure to use your anti-virus software to "scan" any downloaded file, before installing it on your computer. Registration is required to use their database. ZD.Net Free Downloads - Check this site every day for free file downloads including applications, utilities, games, MP3, Audio, Internet, screen savers, palm pilot, pocketPC, etc. Tucwos offers a variety of files to download for your system. Too many programs to try to list. Suffering through the pop-up ads is worth the trouble. Sofotex.com offers a wide variety of software to download. Most of the programs seem to be "shareware" which means that you might have to register (purchase) the software to get the full version and/or documentation.
